– The Ohanaeze Ndigbo group has disclosed which political parties and candidates Igbos would vote for in the 2019 general elections
– The president general of the group, John Nwodo, stated that he would advise Igbos to only vote for a candidate of the political party that has the best programmes for them
– Nwodo stated that in 2019, he would seek audience with political candidates, and that all the political parties must sell their manifestos to the group, so that it would be able to advise Ndigbo appropriately
The Ohanaeze Ndigbo group has stated that in the 2019 general elections, Igbos would only support political parties and candidates who have the interest of Ndigbo in their agendas, Vanguard reports.
The disclosure was made by Chief John Nnia Nwodo, the president general of the body, at a reception organized in his honour by the Enugu state chapter of the group.
NAIJ.com gathers that Nwodo stated that in 2019, the group would advise Igbos to vote for a candidate of the political party that has the best programmes for Ndigbo, even though Ohanaeze was a non-political association.
He stated: “Ohanaeze is a non-political organization and the membership of Ohanaeze cuts across political lines.
“All Igbo are members of Ohanaeze from their town unions and they all exist in all the political parties, so I cannot be an agent of any political party.
“What is important to Ohanaeze is that before the election, all the political parties must sell their manifestos to us so that we can advise the Igbos appropriately.
“The parties have not yet nominated their candidates; so, it is premature for me to begin to ask them what they have.
“When the candidates emerge, I will seek audience with them. First of all, I’ll want whoever becomes the next president of Nigeria to sign an undertaking, if he is not an Igbo man, that he will not stay for more than one tenure and that the next president of Nigeria will come to Igbo thereafter.
“That is the irreducible minimum for Ndigbo.”
Meanwhile, NAIJ.com previously reported that Osita Okechukwu, the director general of Voice of Nigeria (VON), advised his fellow Igbos to vote for President Buhari in 2019.
Okechukwu called on the president general of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief John Nnia Nwodo, to be pragmatic, strategic and introspective in advancing the interest of Ndigbo.
He admitted that that there were fault lines, but advised that it should not warrant abuses since President Buhari had congratulated Nwodo and offered him an olive branch on the latter’s assumption of office.
