– The Shi’ite leader thanked the government for allowing him access to his doctors
The Leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky has made his first public appearance in more than two years saying he is alive and well.
The leader of the Shi’ite group has been in custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) following his alleged confrontation of his group with the military.
There have been rumours about the state of El-Zakzaky with some saying he had passed away.
Channels however reported that the IMN leader confirmed that he is alive and thanked Nigerians and the federal government for allowing him access to his own doctors.
He said: “It was severe on me on Monday but subsequently it started subsiding and for the first time at least the security allowed me to see my own Doctors.
“So it was my own doctors who examined me. Before I used to be examined by security doctors, this time I did not agree, and my own doctors came to examine me.
“I am getting better, thanks to all your prayers.”
Meanwhile, the Nigeria police arrested 52 members of the IMN popularly known as Shiites.
The Shiite members were arrested during a protest against the prolonged detention of El-Zakzaky and his wife, Zainab, by security operatives.
A statement signed by the Federal Capital Territory command spokesperson, Anjuguri Manzah, said the arrest followed a violent protest by members of the IMN who went on rampage in Abuja.
