Waris makes Champions League debut in Liverpool drubbing

The 26-year-old was handed a first taste of the elite European inter-club competition on Wednesday

Ghana striker Abdul Majeed Waris made his first appearance in the Uefa Champions League on Wednesday in the Round of 16 clash between FC Porto and Liverpool.

The frontman was a second half substitute, replacing Yacine Brahimi in the 62nd minute as his Portuguese side slumped to an embarrassing 5-0 home defeat at Estadio Do Dragao.

Senegalese attacker Sadio Mane scored three times while Egypt sensation Mohamed Salah and Brazil forward Roberto Firmino added a goal each.

It was just the Ghanaian’s fifth game for Porto since completing a half-season loan switch from French side Lorient last month.

All substitute appearances, three of the outings have come in the Portuguese topflight, with one each coming in the Portuguese League Cup. He is yet to score for the club.

Waris came close to joining French top tier side Caen, but Porto’s late bid was enough to force a detour.

The loan move includes a buyout clause worth €6 million, according to French club Lorient.
